The Motability Scheme helps you become mobile by exchanging your higher rate mobility allowance to lease a new affordable car. This lease is all-inclusive with insurance, servicing, maintenance and breakdown cover included and payments are automatically taken from your mobility allowance. It is that easy.

For more than three decades, the scheme has been helping millions of people across the UK find a more suitable motoring solution. Any eligible driver, carer or specified road user can apply for the nationwide Motability Scheme to benefit from an affordable and adaptable new car.

There is no upper age limit for the scheme, provided you receive one of the allowances listed above, but it is important to note that at the time you apply, you must have at least 12 months of benefits remaining. Attendance Allowance is not a qualifying benefit. The Government has begun replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for all disabled people aged between 16 and 64.
If you are awarded the Enhanced Rate of Mobility Component of PIP, you will continue to be able to lease a car through the Motability Scheme, as you did previously.
But don't worry, if you have at least 12 months of your current allowance remaining, then you still be able to choose your new vehicle during the PIP rollout.If you have any concerns about the PIP rollout, please do not hesitate to contact one of our Motability Advisors, who will happily talk you through the ordering process.
If you opt for the Mobility scheme you do not need to drive. You can nominate friends and family members as drivers if you're not able to drive the car yourself. Up to two drivers can be nominated for free, with an extra cost for a third person. All of the people you nominate should live within five miles of your address and have to agree to Motability's terms and conditions.
The eligibility of your nominated drivers will depend on their ages, convictions they might have, and the insurance group of the Motability car you choose. Only one driver under the age of 21 is allowed, and drivers up to the age of 25 can only drive models with 120bhp or less in insurance brackets 1-16. If you have a child aged three years or older who is claiming DLA, you can also apply for a car on their behalf as their parent or guardian. You'll then be their nominated driver for the vehicle.

The driving adjustments available are wide-ranging, to suit the majority of disabled road users. Electronic hand-controls are an option for people who have limited mobility in their feet and legs, and the pedals and steering wheel can be modified to make them simpler to use. In addition, every Ford car that's supplied through the Motability Scheme works with an automatic gearbox.
Again, there's a selection of options available, for example if you find it difficult to get in and out of your vehicle, you could select a swivel chair or an electric hoist to be fitted to your car.
Seat transfer plates and side steps can be fitted in various positions to most vehicles. They're stored securely away when not in use to help occupants in and out of vehicles.
The rear of your Ford can be rearranged to fit a scooter or wheelchair, and an electronic hoist can be added to help get these items in and out. This is of particular benefit to those who don't need a full Wheelchair Adapted Vehicle (WAV).
We also realise that your needs may change during your three-year term on the Motability Scheme. Alongside the items and adaptations fitted when you first receive your Ford, we may be able to make further adjustments and retro-fit new assistance to keep you fully supported during your contract period.
