A recent report from AutoExpress, suggests that Ford is set add to a new hot diesel ST to the face-lifted Ford Focus range for 2014. The announcement was apparently made at a dinner hosted by Mark Fields, Ford's Chief Operating Officer, at the Geneva Motor Show last week.
The current model Focus ST comes with just one petrol engine but the new one, will add a hot diesel and will get better handling too.
Despite not officially being confirmed by Ford yet, the Focus ST Diesel is said to be a straight up rival for the Volkswagen Golf GTD and will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine with 183bhp. The Focus ST Diesel will be capable of reaching 60mph from a standing start in just 8.0 seconds and should also favour owners and company car tax payers because it would emit just 114g/km of CO2. In addition, the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine has also been tweaked, improving its fuel economy by up to 7%.
According to Ford Product Boss Raj Nair, we should expect a sharper driving experience from the new Focus ST because the suspension and steering systems have been tuned to serve up superior handling to the outgoing model. "A heavily revised steering mount to reduce wheel hop and eliminate steering thump has been added, along with new wheels and tyres and further tweaks to improve steering feel". The new Focus ST Diesel would also get the same suspension and steering as the petrol-powered variant.
Both the petrol and diesel Focus ST models are expected to go on sale at the end of they year. Images of the revised ST have yet to be released but we expect they will benefit from the same exterior and interior enhancements, hinted by the recent face-lift Focus, set to be launched in the UK this summer.
One big question remains, what will Ford name the Focus ST Diesel? - The Volkswagen Golf GTI becomes the GTD when it has diesel power so we're hoping that the Focus ST doesn't become the 'Focus STD' - The jokes would be endless!
