The all-new 2016 Ford Focus RS has been turning heads as it made its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month - showcasing some advanced performance technologies that will help deliver the ultimate fun-to-drive experience.
Ford Performance Chief Dave Pericak explains; "The new Focus RS is exhilarating to drive, and is also a car where performance is accessible to all."
Tyre smoke lovers rejoice! Not only does the new Focus RS feature the innovative Ford Performance All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system, but it also delivers first class cornering speed, thrilling performance, selectable driving modes and an industry-first drift button and launch control!
Four different drive modes configure the new RS to deliver optimum performance in road or circuit driving conditions - with Normal, Sport or Track settings - plus a special Drift Mode. Each mode has specific settings for the AWD system, damper controls, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system, steering and engine responses, and exhaust sound.
Like something out of a video racing game, the new RS's drift mode features a specially developed calibration for the AWD system which modifies the torque distribution to help the driver achieve controlled oversteer drifts under circuit conditions - effectively giving the driver the ability to execute the perfect powerslide at the push of a button!
The 'drift mode' acts in conjunction with the ESC, so that the 'safety net' isn't entirely removed. The system, through some very fancy tech, senses the car's yaw rate, while also collecting data regarding steering and throttle inputs to assess whether the driver is keeping pace with the drift. Should the driver fall too far behind, the ESC kicks in, hopefully keeping some distance between your shiny new Ford Focus RS, and that tree!
Pericak sums this up nicely “The limits we're going to set give anyone enough room to have fun, so there's no need to turn the ESC off. If you've gone as far as we're going to let you go, then you probably shouldn't be going any further." Basically, know your limits.
For ultimate performance off the start-line, the new Focus RS will also feature launch control, which configures the vehicle's chassis and powertrain systems to deliver the fastest possible acceleration, whatever the track conditions.
The driver selects launch control from the cluster menu, engages first gear, applies full throttle and then releases the clutch. The vehicle then delivers optimum drive, maintaining maximum torque using a turbo overboost function, managing the traction control system, and setting the dampers.
To achieve maximum acceleration through the gears, a performance shift light alerts the driver when approaching the optimum upshift point and flashes if the engine hits the limit of 6,800rpm.
The new Focus RS sounds like it will be an absolute ball and we can't wait to find out! If you're interested in ordering the new RS at TCH then please visit this link for more information or complete the form below and we'll get back to you soon.
