Ford & VW to Collaborate on Commercial Vehicles

Today, Ford and Volkswagen signed off on a strategic alliance for commercial vehicles, which is exciting news for lovers of Transit and Scania vans.

The alliance will mean better technologies and capabilities for customers at a lower cost for both companies. It will ensure that Ford and VW can work together on development and help push forward commercial vehicle technologies for a demanding market that is wanting more and more from vehicles, especially in terms of emissions.

Although little information has been announced so far, the companies have said that the collaboration could include hybrid and electric engines, connectivity and autonomous driving systems for commercial vehicles. Ford are currently undertaking trials for a PHEV Transit Custom in London, signifying that Ford are wanting to push more into the hybrid and electric market.

The two companies have collaborated before, having shared a platform for the Ford Galaxy, Volkswagen Sharan and Seat Alhambra in the nineties.

It has been a busy few weeks for Ford after announcing plans to renovate the famous Michigan Central Station in Detroit. The building was open between 1914 and 1988 but since then has suffered a lot of vandalism inside. There are huge plans for the building, including providing offices for up to 5,000 engineers and technology specialists.
