Ford Fiesta 2017 vs 2018: how do they compare?

The 2017 Ford Fiesta is also known as the seventh generation (MK7) of the supermini and the 2018 Ford Fiesta is the eighth generation (MK8). The 2018 Ford Fiesta follows on from the 2017 model in terms of its design and performance, which has made it one of the most popular cars in the UK for a number of years. The 2017 version of the Ford Fiesta hatch was available in various trim levels including the Studio, Style, Style+, Zetec, Titanium, Edge and ECOnetic, all of which are provided with a range of different features.

When the 2018 version was released, Ford changed the trim levels to include:

  • Ford Fiesta Zetec
  • Ford Fiesta Titanium
  • Ford Fiesta ST
  • Ford Fiesta Active

Again, as you upgrade on the trim you choose, different interior and exterior features are included. The Ford Fiesta ST offers something a little faster and sportier, while the Ford Fiesta Active offers SUV-inspired styling.

Engine and Performance

The 2017 Ford Fiesta offers a range of engine sizes with engines from a 1.0 litre three-cylinder turbo EcoBoost petrol engine to a higher performance 1.6 litre turbo engine in the Ford Fiesta ST.

The 2017 Ford Fiesta is larger than older models, which means its 0-60mph time has been compromised. The Ford Fiesta 125 bhp EcoBoost model can still achieve 0-60mph in 9.9 seconds.

On the other hand, the 2017 Ford Fiesta ST has a little extra power with a 1.5 litre EcoBoost engine that achieves 197 bhp. This extra power provides a 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds.

Interior Features

The 2017 Ford Fiesta features the biggest changes to previous models with an updated cabin. Features include:

  • Automatic headlights
  • Manual speed limiter
  • Lane-keeping system
  • Touchscreen infotainment system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Cruise control
  • Auto high beam
  • More room in the back
  • 292 litres of boot space

Optional extras on higher trim levels also include:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Retractable door edge protectors

The 2018 Ford Fiesta hatchback offers an upgrade on its predecessor with more modern technology including a dashboard touchscreen media system. In addition, the Fiesta Vignale edition has a panoramic sunroof and leather seats and the Fiesta Active offers a higher driving position and a B&O sound system.

The Ford Fiesta offers sportier features including selectable drive modes, a leather steering wheel and recaro seats. This offers a little more luxury if you’re looking for an upgrade on the traditional family car.

Exterior Features

The 2017 Ford Fiesta is similar in design to its predecessor which launched in 2013. It’s slightly bigger than this model but keeps the recognisable look and feel of past models.

Introduced to the range was also the Ford Fiesta ST-Line which offers a slightly more sporty look and feel to this hatchback without the same increases in cost as you might find with the Ford Fiesta ST. It features larger alloy wheels and an aggressive body kit which matches the Ford Fiesta ST released later in 2018.

The 2018 version of the car, with its different trim levels, has something to suit everyone. From a traditional Ford Fiesta style to the SUV style of the Fiesta Active and the sporty style of the Ford Fiesta ST.

Costs

Costs vary between the different supermini Ford Fiesta models, especially since they each have a variety of optional features to contend with. Compared to their rivals such as the Vauxhall Corsa and VW Polo, the prices remain relatively low all-around.

Though the price of both has gone down by several thousand pounds with time and the used car market, prices will vary depending on the age of the car and the trim you choose.

Some 2017 models are now below £10,000. On the road prices for the 2018 Ford Fiesta begin at £16,620.

As older cars, you will not find the same fuel efficiency as a brand new Fiesta but, the Ford Fiesta is well-known for being a small car with good fuel efficiency so, while it may cost you more to run than a new Fiesta, it’s still relatively low in comparison to other older cars.

Buying an older, used car will also come with MOT costs and higher tax costs so this is something that should be considered when choosing between a new or used car and the age of the car you choose to buy.

The used car you choose will be mostly dependent on your budget and what you’re looking to get out of the car. At TC Harrison, we stock a wide variety of used Ford Fiesta.
