First impressions

These two popular family hatchbacks are often compared with each other when it comes to buying a new car. Both cars prioritise practicality and are available in a wide range of models with varying specifications so there is something for every driver.

First produced in 1972 as a small, reliable family car, the Ford Fiesta has since become the UK's bestselling car. Since its initial introduction to the market, it has undergone multiple redesigns and upgrades and is now available in a range of variations.

The Toyota Auris was originally introduced in 2006. However, it has now been discontinued and rebranded as the Toyota Corolla. There are still plenty of second-hand Toyota Auris' available on the market, and they remain a popular choice for those looking for a low emission, fuel-efficient hatchback. Style-wise, the Auris features a distinctive look across its range of models.

Engine sizes

The Fiesta’s 1.1-litre Ti-VCT petrol engine offers cheaper insurance but lacks the power of more advanced models. The 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine is proving the most popular, available in 99bhp and 123bhp for increased power.

Ford now also offers mild hybrid options, with the Ecoboost Hybrid Integration engine boasting increased fuel efficiency and lower emissions. In 2022, Ford discontinued its diesel engines so you would have to find a second-hand car for these models.

For the Toyota Auris hatchback, the 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines proved the most popular. Whilst these engines typically offer less power than Ford's options, they do feature four cylinders so run quieter.

A hybrid model is also available, featuring a 1.8-litre petrol engine to complement its electric motor. The Auris is also available with a 1.4-litre diesel engine.

Ultimately, your engine depends on the model you choose, as options vary across both Ford and Toyota.

Interior features

For a hatchback, interior space and comfort are essential. Popular with families, both the Ford Fiesta and Toyota Auris have much to offer in the way of spacious interiors.

Steering wheel

The Ford Fiesta's steering wheel measures 14 inches in diameter, with the design differing across the various models. Ford's Comfort Kit is available as an add-on, featuring a heated steering wheel for those cold winter mornings. Perhaps most notably, the Fiesta ST-Line edition features a flat-bottomed steering wheel for a sporty feel.

The Toyota Auris features a 14 ½ inch diameter steering wheel that is adjustable for the driver's comfort. There is no heated option with the Auris' steering wheel, with the Toyota models taking a simpler design.

Seats

Featuring five leather seats, the Ford Fiesta offers plenty of space for both front and back seat passengers. Depending on the model you choose, heated seats may be included or available as an additional feature.

Similarly, the Toyota Auris has five seats and enough room for passenger comfort on long journeys. Heated seats were available as an add-on in some models, so you may be able to find a second-hand car.

Climate control

Depending on the model you choose, the Ford Fiesta comes equipped with HVAC or climate control. Whilst entry-level models are equipped with adequate heating and ventilation, Ford's high spec Fiestas, such as the Fiesta ST-Line Vignale Edition, feature Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC).

Though not as high-spec, the Toyota Auris comes equipped with automatic air conditioning and dual-climate control for optimum comfort of both the driver and passengers.

Boot space

The Ford Fiesta has improved its boot space as new models are released, with the latest models offering 311 litres of space when the parcel shelf is in place.

The Toyota Auris is the option to go for if you require plenty of boot space, with its largest models boasting an impressive 360-litre capacity.

Extra features

Even the entry-level Ford Fiesta models now feature an 8-inch tablet-style infotainment display, offering everything from vehicle navigation to voice command calls and texting. The Fiesta also offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto Connectivity, standard Bluetooth and a DAB tuner to keep you entertained on the go.

All versions of the Auris come complete with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring satnav, Bluetooth streaming and a rear-view camera.

Exterior features

Ford caters to all tastes with the Ford Fiesta, with modern, stylish models for those looking for a reliable family vehicle, and sportier editions for those who prefer their car to have an edge. The Fiesta ST-Line Vignale is at the higher end of the market, with sleek chrome finishings and pearl-grey alloys.

Wheels and tyres

On each Ford Fiesta model, every aspect has been carefully considered, including the wheels. At the high end of the market is the Fiesta ST-Line Vignale with pearl-grey chrome alloys, whilst the sportier Ford Fiesta ST boasts black wheel arches with a rock metallic finish for a tougher effect.

Entry-level Toyota Auris models come with steel alloys. There is the option to update these basic alloys to sportier or sleekier designs.

Exterior style and appearance

The Toyota Auris is fairly simple in terms of its exterior style, with the aim being to provide transport with minimal fuss.

The Ford Fiesta has more to offer in terms of style, with Ford adapting the design to include smooth lines and flowing curves for a more modern look. If you’re looking for a family hatchback that is practical but still provides an attractive car, the Ford Fiesta’s a great choice.

Doors

Both vehicles have five doors, but some Ford Fiesta models have three.

Lights

Ford's latest Fiesta models are equipped with LED running lights, ensuring the vehicle is clearly visible whilst on the roads. They also feature integrated fog lights, with some models including automatic headlights. The interior now also boasts LED coloured dashboard lights which can be matched to the car's body colour.

Practicality is the key with the Toyota Auris. Dusk-sensing headlights mean that you will always be visible to other drivers and pedestrians, whilst the follow-me-home lighting will see you to your front door safely.

Spoiler

Whilst neither car comes complete with a spoiler, there is always the option to add one if you are looking for a sportier look.

Bumpers

The Ford Fiesta's body-coloured bumpers integrate smoothly into the vehicle's modern design. Similarly, the Toyota Auris features body-coloured bumpers, with later models boasting a wider bumper for a sportier feel.
