Let's Talk About Speed

Brake have announced that the theme for this year’s Road Safety Week will be ‘Let’s talk about speed’. The event this year will take place between 19th and 25th November and will focus on how fast we travel and why reducing speed saves lives.

Statistically, 25% of deaths on the road can be put down to excessive speed as a contributing factor. High speeds on the road can lead to stopping distances increasing, which can be dangerous at all times but especially during wet weather. Driving too quickly can also raise the force of impact in which you hit something- increasing the risk to yourself, pedestrians and other drivers.

Ross Moorlock, Interim CEO at Brake, said “Every time we drive faster than the speed limit, or too fast for the road conditions, we increase the risk of a crash – and we increase the chance that someone will be killed or hurt on the road. The faster you go, the longer the stopping distance and the harder you will hit something.

“Whoever you are, and however you travel – this year we are challenging everyone to start talking about speed with your friends, families and colleagues.”
