Getting an upgrade to your current vehicle should be an exciting event. However, the used car market can open you up to a multitude of disappointments, from the likes of dishonest garages desperately trying to shift stock, to unknowledgeable private sellers trying to make money quickly from a car that’s not up to scratch.
TC Harrison has been suppliers of quality used cars for over 90 years. So, it’s safe to say, we know our stuff. Our aim is to deliver a pressure-free environment for you to get to know your next car before purchasing. We have a flourishing range of stock across our seven dealerships, and if you see a car you like that’s not local, we’ll happily move it to your nearest TCH Ford for you to test out.
My partner and I recently discussed the need for a second car, he works away regularly, and I needed an extra set of wheels to get me to and from work. We considered getting a used and approved SUV from TC Harrison Ford, but I reassessed because we are a young childless couple. Why be sensible when I can buy my dream sports car? So, I brought the car, a 2010 convertible Audi TT, from a private seller on AutoTrader.
I purchased the car with a loan from my bank at double the interest rate offered by TC Harrison. Although the higher interest rate stung, the Audi was more than half the price of other used and approved vehicles at the TC Harrison dealership. I’d be able to pay off the loan within 2 years and at a lower monthly payment which worked considering I am also saving for a mortgage deposit. Before going to see the car, I checked the service and MOT history online which checked out, all issues seem to have been fixed as soon as they were noticed. The vehicle also had 12 months MOT and low mileage for the age. I organised a test drive with the owner, the car drove beautifully, the engine looked and sounded perfectly fine and started first time. I checked the oil and water levels, which seemed fine too. When I asked why the owner was selling, he said he no longer had use for it, he reassured me that the car had been well looked after. The only problem I identified was the lack of a second key, which wasn’t a big deal at the time – this is something that I can sort later.
During the first week of owning the Audi, I experienced a light show on the dashboard, loss of power, an electrical burning smell, the engine choking and spluttering, and a leaky coolant tank. I took the car to a local, trusted garage for a once over, unfortunately the mechanic did not have the full diagnostic tools to identify the exact problems. However, he suspected engine misfire, a fault with the ABS, issues with one of the fuel pumps, coolant system leak and issues with the crankshaft. I contacted the previous owner who refused to take the car back or give my money back, he did however, offer to contribute to any costs required to fix the vehicle (for this I feel lucky). To identify the exact issues, I have booked the car into a specialist diagnostics centre, an extra cost I did not expect.
