Why is it important to service your Ford Mustang regularly?

All car manufacturers recommend that their vehicles are serviced at regular intervals to ensure they remain safe and in good condition. Servicing involves a maintenance check such as oil changes and spark plug replacements. If these procedures are neglected, they can lead to major mechanical problems which can be expensive to fix if they’re not identified.

Regular servicing has a number of benefits including:

Check overall health of the car

A service also involves a thorough inspection of the car to check the health of the engine and ensure all parts of the vehicle are operating correctly and safely. It is vital that cars are routinely examined to make sure they are roadworthy. Although MOTs help to check that a car is safe to be on the road, service inspections tend to be more thorough. Safety checks involve inspections of tyres, wheels, brakes and suspension.

Identify mechanical problems

Often, services allow for minor mechanical problems to be identified early. This means they can be fixed quickly and affordably before they develop into major malfunctions that could lead to sudden breakdowns and incredibly costly repairs. Servicing can therefore help you to save money in the long term and reduce the risk of inconvenient breakdowns and expensive vehicle recovery costs.

Retain the car’s value

Cars that are serviced regularly and in line with manufacturers' servicing interval guidelines tend to retain their value far better than those which are not. If you'd like to maintain the resale value of your car, it's important to have it serviced often and to maintain a proper service log that demonstrates to potential buyers that you have kept the vehicle in the best possible condition.

When undergoing a Ford service, be sure to use a reputable technician who will perform a service in line with Ford's guidelines. Ensure any replacement parts used are official Ford parts. Unofficial parts could lead to your warranty being void should the car experience a mechanical failure as a result of poor quality repairs being carried out.

Ford Mustang service intervals

Car manufacturers usually recommend a maintenance schedule for their cars depending on the engine, age and mileage of the car.

This is the recommended maintenance schedule for Ford Mustang models:

Model

Service Interval

Ford Mustang 2.3L EcoBoost Manual (2014-2015)

Every year or 10,000 miles

Ford Mustang 2.3L EcoBoost Automatic (2014-2015)

Every year or 10,000 miles

Ford Mustang 2015 5.0L Duratec Ti-VCT V8 Manual (2014-2015)

Every year or 10,000 miles

Ford Mustang 2015 5.0L Duratec Ti-VCT V8 Automatic (2014-2015)

Every year or 10,000 miles

Mustang Mach-E (2021)

Every 2 years or 18,000 miles

In addition to these services, Ford recommends that additional maintenance be performed on Mustangs at other intervals. Every 20,000 miles the cabin air filter should be replaced, and at 30,000 miles the engine air filter should be replaced. After every 100,000 miles, the engine coolant should be changed, the spark plugs replaced, and the accessory drive belt inspected. Every 150,000 miles it is recommended that the transmission filter and fluid is changed, the rear axle fluid is changed, and the accessory drives belts are replaced if this hasn't been done already.

How often should you change the oil in your Ford Mustang?

Whilst it’s important to have your Ford Mustang serviced according to the recommended intervals, Ford Mustangs have an on-board computer system that monitors miles travelled and vehicle usage to prompt owners to undergo engine oil changes at the right intervals.

Ford Mustangs that are used for normal commuting and motorway driving will require an engine oil change around every 7,000 to 10,000 miles.

If a Mustang is frequently driven at very high engine speeds and with lots of braking and hard cornering, or if is often towing a heavy load, an oil change will be required every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. Those who regularly take their mustang out onto the track and do lots of high revving may need to have their oil changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

During an engine oil change service, a multi-point inspection should be carried out. Tyres should be rotated, and brake pads, hoses, rotors, and brake fluid should be inspected. Levels of automatic transmission fluid should be checked along with the exhaust system, heat shield, and engine cooling system and hoses. Rear-axle and U-joints should be inspected and lubricated. Elements such as steering linkage, suspension and driveshaft should also be examined and lubricated. Finally, wheels should be inspected for signs of wear, looseness, drag, or abnormal noise.
